From Their Website:

The Ohio Main Street program is administered by Heritage Ohio, and has been working with communities across the state of Ohio to revitalize their historic or traditional commercial areas. Based in historic preservation, the Main Street approach was developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to save historic commercial architecture and the fabric of American community-built environments, but has become a powerful economic development tool as well.

The Main Street program is designed to improve all aspects of the downtown business district, producing tangible and intangible benefits. Improving economic management, strengthening public participation, and making downtown a fun place to visit are as critical to Main Street’s future as recruiting new businesses, rehabilitating buildings, and expanding parking. Building on downtown’s inherent assets – rich architecture, personal service, and traditional values and most of all, a sense of place – the Main Street approach has rekindled entrepreneurship, downtown cooperation and civic concern.

It has earned national recognition as a practical strategy appropriately scaled to a community’s local resources and conditions. And because it is a locally driven program, all initiative stems from local issues and concerns.

The Amherst Historical Society, a nonprofit 50lc(3) organization, was founded in April of 1973 and currently boasts about 350 members. The Society became accredited in 1990 by the Ohio Association of Historical Societies and Museums (OAHSM). Only about 15% of Ohio museums and historical societies have achieved such accreditation.

Current efforts are focused on expanding our educational and civic role in greater Amherst/Lorain County community by providing new and nontraditional education programs to all county schools. Our most important current educational service is our “One Room School” program for 3rd graders. We received the prestigious Ohio Association of Historical Societies and Museum’s Achievement Award for a Youth School Program. We also received the coveted “Crystal Apple” Award from the Amherst Board of Education in recognition of the excellence in our academic programming.

The Amherst Church of Christ was started by seven Christians who were worshipping with a congregation in Lorain. These members decided they wanted to begin a congregation in Amherst. On August 28, 1960, the first meeting was held in a refurbished church building at the corner of Forest and Tenney Streets. Soon thereafter, the men of the congregation began looking for property to construct a permanent building. They found 2.5 acres of land on Washington Street. The building was completed in 1966. Since then we have grown to over 150 members strong.

We are a nondenominational church that serves and worships God according to his word. We believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God and is our guide.
